Online services that provide storage are also often known as cloud storage. For example, this might be with an online service, or on an external hard drive or laptop stored in a different building, or at a friend’s home. Off-site backup has you storing your backup files somewhere completely different to your original files. For example, if you have a computer at home, you can back up your files to an external hard drive. On-site backup has you storing your backup files in the same physical location as your original files. There are two main types of digital photo backup, on-site and off-site. If the original is lost, the backup can be copied to replace it, with no loss in quality. The duplicate will be exactly the same as the original, and can be stored in a different location. A digital file is essentially just some computer data held on a medium like a memory card or hard drive.īecause a file is digital data, it can be easily duplicated. Because of this, many modern film photographers digitize their film negatives to have an additional backup.Īn advantage of digital photography over film photography is that all our images are stored as digital files. However, film negatives are very susceptible to degradation, damage, and loss. In film photography, you would normally just have a physical negative as your only backup to your developed photos. Although photo backups can be physical and tangible (e.g, film negative, printed photo), we will focus on digital photo backups in this article.
